Lightning Returns Demo

I never got around to finishing XIII-2 so Im very confused as far as the plot goes. I went into this for the gameplay and combat that I keep hearing about. I actually really enjoyed the garbs and the schemata system, though I think I still need a couple more playthroughs to fully grasp how the ATB consuption works. At times I felt like I was button mashing a bit (though I was still having fun lol). I really dug the twitter/fb integration even if it does feel a little gimmicky at first. Something about Outworld Communications felt a lot like what Demon's Soul was doing years ago.

What'd everyone else think of this?

I loved it! I had no idea what was going on in the story since I didn't beat FFXIII-2 either, but the combat is fun as fuck. I just need to get use to using potions again rather than relying on auto healing when the battle is over.

One thing I didn't like is how they tweaked staggering. I preferred being able to see the bar before, and now it's just hard to keep track of. I couldn't tell half the time if the boss was staggered or not.

I played the demo a couple days ago and loved every second of it. Staggering took me a while to get used to, but after a couple of battles with the boss (you can go encounter it in the wild after you beat it), I figured it out all right.

This demo was awesome. So glad I preordered the collectors edition. The new outfits with interchangable attacks is really cool, plus Lightning looks incredible.

When doesn't she? :P

I'm so jealous of the CE, no such thing is getting released here (thanks SE :|), let me know what you think of the extra stuff? I might import it if I can get it cheap at some point :)

I've seen a little of the demo gameplay (what I assume is the "boss"), but I want to spoil as little as possible for myself, I'm already certain i'm going to enjoy it :)

I wanted to do that as well, but apparently, if you play through the whole demo and post one of your scores via the Outerworld service, you have the Siegfried schema unlocked in the full release, so I gave it a go. I have been trying my best not to look too deeply into previews or gameplay videos of the game, though I'm finding it very hard not to.

Ordered the CE as well, and am importing it. I live all the way south, almost nothing good comes here. Importing is the only solution.

Damn I should probably try the demo now. I too never finished XIII-2, just could not get into it enough. As long as I can somewhat grasp the story I may give this game a try since everyone seems to love the combat so much. I just hope the combat can make up for a potentially confusing time with the story.

Man the combat and music in this game is really great. But whats with square and it's sequels? They seem to always mutilate the story of the original game. Trust me Pete XIII-2 kinda craps on what we thought was an excellent XIII story.

For anyone who isn't caught up on the story for the series, they made this absolutely amazing 16bit style summary:

Even if you already know what's going on, it's a work of art, everyone should watch it :)

That 16 bit summary is AMAZING!!! The remixed music is great and I freaking lost it when the Lightning 'Odin' 'Gestalt' mode happened in Battle!!! I would so be down for a 16 bit remastered edition of the XIII series...just fantastic!!!

I have completed FF13 and have 13-2 but haven't played it yet. 13-2's demo just didn't grasp me. I did play the Lightning Returns demo and I really like the battle system despite how much I enjoyed the 13 battle system. Lightning Returns battle system seems like a hybrid of a Tales game and FFX-2 (I like X-2). I don't care for the jumping and platforming in the game. I may actually pick this up.

I would disagree. While I think that XIII-2 was ultimately rather unnecessary (XIII had a plot with a pretty distinct resolution that I was hugely satisfied with), I nevertheless greatly enjoyed the time-travelling story and its exploration of the greater context and expansion of the mythology of the universe. I know some people just couldn't connect with Noel, Serah, or any of the other new characters, but I really liked them and thought they all were well-developed and interesting, particularly as the game goes on. I'm very curious to see the resolution this story will ultimately have in Lightning Returns.

Also, that trailer OMEGA posted is awesome. Check it out if you don't care about spoiling the first two games or have already experienced them.

The demo is pretty cool, I'm still not sure if I'm going to get the game right away. It seems like they could have made the game completely open world with no battle transitions since you just play as Lightning. Maybe there's some reason for it, I guess I'll find out.

Well, in the demo you encounter enemies in hallways, i'm sure you wouldn't want to have a battle with VERY limited space like that. When it transitions, you move to a big arena style battleground. They could have made it completely open world, sure. But there's MMOs for that. The designers of this game had something much different in mind. Try FFXIV:ARR.

Maybe it doesn't have to be completely open world like an MMO, that was probably a poor choice of words, but they could have made the areas bigger. It's like they're going backwards after FFXII.

Sure, in XIII we had roaming enemies, but a lot of areas were tight hallways and linear paths. XIII-2 opened up the game world but we had that weird random encounter thing where they pop up with a timer. Now we're back to tight hallways and roaming enemies but this time you only play as one character and it's still necessary to go through a battle transition? I just don't get it, Lightning Returns could have been a full on Action-RPG and kept the same battle system, only with more freedom to control Lightning in battle.

I absolutely adored FFXIII (right up there with IX as my favorite FF game, honestly), and while I made it to the final boss in XIII-2, I still have quite a bit of grinding/fragments I'd like to collect before I beat it. In regards to Lighting Returns, I'm absolutely stoked. Probably my most anticipated game of 2014 the more I think about it (assuming Shadows of Mordor doesn't come out this year!!! :D) I've done my best to avoid ALL coverage of the game, though. I have since watched ONE gameplay video, and it simply reinforced my burning desire to play this game. I definitely like what I hear in the forum's though. Sounds like an absolute blast from the demo alone. I'll wait until the summer so I can enjoy the game to its fullest, without any breaks or college work to distract me! Cannot wait!!! :D

Wow that was so cool! Thanks for posting that. XIII-2's storyline is so weird but I'm glad I know what happens now since I've been having a really hard time playing XIII-2. I'm just not digging the time traveling stuff and characters at all. Kinda want to try and power through it just to see that triple bahamut though :)

It's a difficult final boss fight...at least it was when I fought it, because I didn't really "get" the new Crystarium system until I had already kinda ruined the development of my characters. Also visually stunning.
