Makes sense from MS's point of view. I've never really played the first games but fans of the series, what are your thoughts?!

I only played Gears 1 & 2 so I haven't kept up with recent titles but it most likely will mean micro-transactions for in-game things or stupid DLC that should probably come with the game. I'm not sure if the recent titles already have this so if they do, my point is null & void.

Other than that, I can't see much other harm coming from it. They seem to keep up with the Halo pretty well without excessive releases like CoD

I've only played the first two games as well, and I might play the third one and be done with the series. Anyone know if the third game has an actual ending that I'd be satisfied with?

Agreed. The 2nd ending was so unsatisfactory. I never finished the 1st, stopped right before the final battle I believe and just lost interest for some reason.

I like the games but it's not earth shattering surprising news or anything. All the games have been Xbox exclusives so I had just assumed any future games would be the same anyway. But I guess for people who only buy Sony systems it's bad news.

Lol well I always have both companies consoles but I'm more or less mainly commenting on how this really isn't 'news' so to speak. It would kind of be like Sony announcing that going forward they would continue to exclusively have the Sly Cooper, Ratchet, and Jak games to which my reply would be 'Well no **** I didn't expect anything else really'.

I just mean Gears is already attached at the hip to Microsoft so I never would have thought anyone would have thought that series would be anything but a system exclusive. Ya know. Not poo pooing on the topic just the article that spawned the topic really.

The ending in Gears of War 3 was disappointing to me because it still didn't explain where the Locust came from, nor does it explain much about Queen Myrrah. They never say why she looks human, why she came out guns blazing, and most importantly why is she British...all things I would like to know. Having said all that the campaign was still a shit load of fun to play in co-op! Lots of epic moments.

Don't play Gears of War Judgement, it's trash. I still haven't finished it and playing it feels like a chore. Real shame too because it's made by the guys that did Bulletstorm which was a really excellent game!

Honestly I'm a bit disappointed with this news since there were rumors that Microsoft was announcing a new game today, and I'm assuming this was it. I absolutely love the Gears of War franchise and cannot wait to see what a next gen Gears game is going to look like, but cmon Microsoft...Gears, Halo, Fable, Forza for years now...all great franchises but give me something new already.

Yeah it's no big shock really.

I've always wondered why the Gears games were so successful. I (like many people on here apparently) played the first two, thought the gameplay was fun but the story didn't really seem to go anywhere. It's probably not a franchise I will buy into in the future as I think that there are much better options out there.

After Gears of War Judgment, I can't really say this is better or worse for Gears :/ the Gears of War Trilogy is a fantastic, albeit can be repetitive, shooter. But after Judgments poor attempt at CODomizing it's MP I'll just hope that they learn from that and try to make it Gears of War more like Gears of War again

Meh, I figured Microsoft already had some kind of permagrip on that franchise anyway.

When I saw this thread it got me thinking, and I actually looked that up too before posting... I don't recall ever seeing that for sale but apparently it existed lol.

I remember when the Xbox 360 came out, Gears was one of the only 3rd person shooters out there. I get motion sickness really easily so I couldn't play any 1st person shooters at all. To me, it's the 1st mainstream shooter I was able to play with friends so it means something to me. I'm probably in the minority with that but I don't think there were nearly as many shooters or copycats out there so it was easier for a series to come in and "woo" people.

I suppose I didn't really think of how early it came out in the consoles life-cycle. By the time I had played it I think I had already played Modern Warfare and Halo 3 so it didn't feel like such a big deal to me.

Hey, that's great, providing people are still interested in the series. I do enjoy the first one, I thought second was okay, and I didn't care too much for the third. I have no intentions of playing the fourth game, and the same can be said with future releases.

Yeah Gears 1 came out before Modern Warfare I believe but Halo had obviously been out for some time and had prequels on the original Xbox. I could, of course, be wrong but I really think there was maybe 4-5 different mainstream FPS out there at the time if anyone could believe that lol. Now there's like 30+ current series with copycats every corner? Of course I'm exaggerating a bit but you know what I mean

I recall Gears 1 as having popularized hiding and firing behind cover and the mechanics to jump over cover and duck around the corner and all that jazz. It was not a new mechanic by any means, but it was pertinent to gameplay. In fact it was nearly required that you use cover if you wanted to make it through the game. That was something that the FPS games didn't really use to that extent. It gave Gears a completely different feeling than other FPS's and 3PS's. The atmosphere was quite enjoyable as well. I always felt like a badass running around in Gears.

The Duck and Cover stuff is a godsend for someone like me who is horrible at FPS/3rd person modern shooters. It gives you a fighting chance. If I play any other shooter where you are out in the open I get cut in half by enemy fire. It's why I like Gears or say the shooting in Uncharted.

Funnily enough I'm pretty darn good at shmups and even bullet hell shmups but FPS's slaughter me if they are devoid of duck'n'cover.
