Scratched game discs (PS2 specifically); Scratched game repair

I've been expanding my PS2 library as of late, and we've all had it happen(and it will again as time passes, unfortunately)---- one of your games won't work due to some scratches just deep enough to mess things up. Pretty annoying when it happens 1/4 of the way through Metal Gear Solid 3.

I'm looking for some proven scratched disc repair methods/products----not cleaners, but if that's included I won't complain. I've tried that "scratch remover polish" that Walmart sells, but it's not something I'd recommend. I gave it a whirl because it was only $5-6 and that was all that they had. I bought a decent product quite a few years ago, at a place like Wally or Kmart, and it worked but I don't remember the name of it. It was one of those that you would put the disc down onto a spinning device.

I've done some google searches but I'm not satisfied with the homemade remedy toothpaste methods, etc..etc..

What has worked for you?

Thanks ladies and gents.

I always just used alcohol but I don't know if that will help a deep scratch like that.

Grillmaster I can tell you what works for me almost 100% of the time unless it's a deep deep scratch. Buy this exact toothpaste 'Colgate Total Advanced Fresh GEL'. I'm serious it has to be this one and the Gel version.

Now first rinse the PS2 disc with water to remove any loose dirt. Then put about 5-6 little blobs of toothpaste in a pattern like you are making a 5- pointed star with the paste blobs on the points. Now with your finger start with one 'point' and start swirling in a clockwise rotation until you reach the next point and continue until you have spread the paste over the whole disc.

Then continue to swirl all the paste for upwards of 2-5 mins to really get it in there and spend extra time where the bad scratch is. Then rinse the paste off using cold tap water and lightly rubbing w/ your thumb and fingers Until all toothpaste residue is gone.

Then dab dry with a sheet of 'Viva' paper towels or any other soft paper towel to dry so no water spots form.

If it doesn't work 1st try which is rare for me do the whole process one more time. If it still doesn't work then resurfacing is your last option. But try this exactly as I have described. It's not worked for me maybe 1 time out of over 100 disc games.

You're talking about one of those for home disc resurfacers! I remember F.Y.E. having sold those a long time ago. You could possibly find some for cheaper nowadays.

As for home remedies, I have tried the toothpaste method and it works to some degree. I hear bananas work well too. But maybe finding a local disc repair shop (most game stores that aren't Gamestop offer resurfaces) that'll do the job for you!

Like LilDeadBoy23 suggested I would take them to a local mom and pop video game store or movie rental place and have them resurface the discs. You can do this fairly cheap and they will look and play like new.

While doing my laundry today, I decided to stop by Family Video. The only video store in town anymore--- the mom and pop stores have been long gone where I live. Anyway, I asked about the re-surfacing and they only charge $1.99, which isn't that bad. She said if it doesn't "look" like it did a good job, that they wouldn't even charge me. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

scratches happen when you leave a disk on any surface. try to avoid that. I've never really had good luck with resurfacing though.

$2 is an excellent price for resurfacing. Most places in my area charge $3-5. Just make sure they do a good job, you shouldn't see any lines on the disc unless they are using a cheap resurfacing machine. If you do, they should run it through the machine with whatever gives it the shine (polisher?) and that'll remove the lines that are left behind. I've dealt with a couple machines before but I don't know the technical terms :P

I hear ya. One of the games is one I ordered--- Hot Shots Golf "Fore"(Awesome golf game!), but it only skips on 1 of the many courses.

I like Stratamaster's solution. It won't be forgotten.
