Man, I love this game! Seeing Johnny review this was a very pleasant surprise! I played it a few times in the arcade, and it was the very first game I bought for my SNES back in 1991 (aside from the pack-in Super Mario World). It's also my all-time favorite shoot'em-up. I don't think it gets enough credit for how many innovations it introduced to the genre back then, and it still feels fresh even today. Back then, I had no idea it was based on a manga, but like Johnny, it really captured my imagination. I even started to write my own story based on the setting and characters, which I guess was fan fiction, although that term didn't exist back then. I have since seen the OAV from the '80s, but I didn't really get into it. The story was a little too tragic for my tastes. What Johnny doesn't mention in the video is that it had a spiritual sequel called Carrier Air Wing/US Navy. I played it a few times in the arcade as well, and it's also pretty good, but it's not based on the manga, so the story and characters are unrelated. (I think it was included in one of the Capcom Generations compilations, though.) It's unfortunate that the licensing has kept the game from being re-released. It deserves more exposure and recognition. (But hey, if Dungeons & Dragons can get re-released...) Anyway, I'm gushing. Thanks for the review, Johnny! Edited by Nester, Feb 16 2014, 10:35 PM.
