Modding the original XBox; Suggestions?

So I just bought an original XBox and have decided it would be fun to "soft mod" it in order to get the most out of it. When I search on Google though I find tons of different ways to do this. Does anyone here have experience modding theirs and if so could you point me in the right direction? I'm really just overwhelmed at all the methods of doing it. Here are links to some of the guides I've found:

http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Easiest-Way-To-Soft-Mod-An-Original-XBOX/
http://www.instructables.com/id/Softmod-Your-Xbox-play-games-without-disk/?ALLSTEPS
http://www.instructables.com/id/Softmod-Original-Xbox-Without-Action-Replay-Cover/

Any help would be appreciated.

I didn't know it was possible to do it without an Action Replay, or plugging the live HDD in to your PC. That first method you posted looks awful enticing... I might do it soon :P I always wanted to, but those two methods I knew seriously turned me off.

Did you do it like in any of the links in the first post? I bought Splinter Cell and am waiting on the USB to xbox cable now. I'm just not sure which method to try-- I don't want to brick my Xbox.

You only need to hook up the HDD to a pc if the HDD was never inside an xbox for example I bought a bigger harddrive from newegg and had to do the unlock/lock thing on a pc

Thanks for the info. When it comes to swapping out the harddrive, I need to buy an IDE hard drive, correct?

Sorry, been busy lately and didn't have a chance to check on this thread. I haven't done the hard drive swap yet, it's still on my to-do list.
