I first played Final Fantasy VI back when it was first released in North America in 1994. Along with Zelda: A Link To the Past, it was one of the first video games that had a strong emotional impact on me. Specifically, it was the scene about halfway through the game where Celes is stranded on an island with Cid. I didn't realize at the time that there were different types of fish you could feed him, and he ended up dying. That just wrecked my day, and I actually felt a little depressed about it! Plus, the whole world of ruin had a really melancholy vibe to it.

Interestingly, I had to buy the game a couple of times. The first copy I got started glitching out halfway through the game. I guess that was not uncommon for early versions, but I decided it was defective, so I returned it to the store. They didn't have a replacement copy, so they said I could either get a refund or exchange it for another game. For some reason, I decided to exchange it for Illusion of Gaia. It was OK, but it was no FF6. Two or three years later, I finally bought another copy directly from SquareSoft's catalog for a whopping US$80, but it was worth it.

I'm not as much into RPGs these days, but I'll always have fond memories of Final Fantasy VI. There really wasn't anything else like it at the time. Plus, it was the reason I immediately bought Chrono Trigger when it came out in 1995, but that's another story... ;)
