No longer is this an urban legend, but a fact, Atari did indeed dump their unsold copies in a landfill.

I'm watching this as well. It's an interesting find...assuming it's genuine. Those copies look a little too good, considering they've been buried for 31 years in a landfill. I know NM is fairly dry, so that might explain it, but I'd also like to see the excavation site as a whole, not just a cart, some boxes and a catalog. Not calling BS on this, but the skeptical part of my brain is going off.

Yeah, this is so cool. This is going to make AVGN's movie kind of weird since the whole concept of the movie is a fictionalized version of finding the buried E.T. copies. It also makes the concept more relevant again, at least.

I'm with browland, I want to see the excavation site and a ass load of games recovered not just a pick of a few carts. For this to have became a urban legend there had to be a ass load of games put out there so I want to see them!

If there are ass loads of games out there i'm calling it now........ You will start seeing Atari E.T. Landfill eBay listings going for more than a Mint copy of E.T.!

I would hazard a guess and say that only a few carts were recoverable in that state...but I too would like to see more evidence. As awesome as it is, a little more proof of this not being a hoax would be appreciated.

Yeah I would like to see more proof as well but this does seem legit. Not going to lie I thought the whole thing would be a fake.

I've seen some new pics emerge and it seems more legit now. Like others have said, I can see carts being taken from the site (or replicates of the landfill carts being made) and sold online. Never underestimate how opportunistic some people can be.

Not sure what they would have to gain from faking it tbh. Though this definately wasn't an Atari only landfill theres a lot of random junk/rubbish in with the games. The thing with me is I don't see the point in doing this in the first place, we all knew it happened.... and surely they could have just gone to the ex Atari head and asked them what happened right? W/e it's still kinda cool I guess?
