I ASK WHY! I never owned phantasy star 2, 3 or 4 on the actual console I had Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 on pc back in 2000 which had Phantasy Star 2 and that is how I played that back in the day but now I would like to own them all on the original system.

It's the same reason why pretty much all 16-bit RPG's from the SNES and GEN are expensive. Collecting obsession mixed with nostalgia and the greed to make profits off others nostalgia and impatience. Prices keep climbing and people keep paying the increased prices and so on.

My advice is get the Sega Genesis collection for the PS3/Xbox360 or the PS2 version because all 4 Phantasy Star games are on them. I want to say you have to unlock one of them on the PS2 version....can't remember. I know that doesn't solve your problem but I wanted to play them too and wasn't going to pay stupid $$$ for the original carts.

I've always wanted Dragon Warrior 2-4 but never got them for the same reason. I'm not sure of the prices and they may not be as expensive as the phantasy star games, but they are definitely harder to come by than Dragon Warrior 1.

Same here. I was lucky a few years back and got Dragon Warrior 1-3 for like $2 a piece. I've never been able to get a cheap copy of Dragon Warrior 4 however.

Oh they totally do man. Beyond Oasis is fantastic and the Shining Force games are great too. Also a personal hidden gem favorite of mine is Sword of Vermilion. There are more but those are some of my most liked ones in addition to the Phantasy Star games of course.

Those Phantasy Star 2 and 3s don't come with the hint books so they aren't truly complete.

This is pretty nice, although a bit pricey, but they are CIB.

You said it yourself. For any game with unconventional accessories and adornments, its understandable that a CIB copy would be more expensive than usual. Otherwise, a boxed copy is actually not that bad. :genesis:

Expensive? I'm looking around eBay and they're at an average $30 for CIB per 16-bit (or 8-bit for the first one) and CD based copies. That's not expensive, that's manageable. You just gotta save some cash, tis all.

PS1 on the master system was 60 last year in Portland. Ridiculous. Playalives did snag one for 20 though. All depends on the seller I guess, but 60 seems high. As far as the Genesis titles to, 4 varies, but 2&3 are reasonable, but watch them go up due to those hints books

Because they want you to pay an arm and a leg for a repulsive cover.

Stratamaster78 said it best. Sometimes there is a point when you have to leave the past in the past and collect things that are more reasonable. Then, one day, you will stand to make a profit once these now dirt cheap Wii games become the nostalgic gems. There have also been some collecting bubbles with things like baseball cards, and when the bubble bursts you can snag some things at good values. But why wait or miss out? Just get these games on the PS3/Xbox collections and have fun.

I got PS1 for around £20, PS2 cost me about £35 without the maps and I think PS3 wasn't expensive at all. Still need to see about acquiring PS4 at some point though. :-/
