The title says it all. I've grouped a few together that I think sound kinda similar. You can pick up to 5 choices. Please note that I've excluded CD based systems and handhelds from the poll.

EDIT: Looks like I forgot Sharp X68000 and that you can't add entries to the poll after it's been created :( Oh well...

EDIT 2: I excluded arcade hardware from the poll due to the large variety of sound chips in them

I voted C64, Sega Mark III, MSX2, Sega Gen/MD, PC-98 B-)

EDIT: For the record, PC-98 has my absolute favorite sound chip! B-)

Mega Drive is definately mine. I just adore the music that was made on that system. The bass and drum sounds especially.

Fully expecting NES/SNES to come out on top of this though.

Just so you know, the Atari 5200's sound chip (which is amazing) is different than the 2600s and 7800s. The 2600s and 7800s will shit in your ears if you want good sound.

Intellivision sounds better than the colecovision IMO

Does the SMS include the FM synth from japan or just the US sound? if its just the US sound, it can die with the 2600 and 7800.

In the end, I choose Intellivision, C64, NES and SNES. I really don't like the Genesis sound. SNES vs Genesis is almost like AWE32 vs SB16. No comparison.

Oh ok, that's cool! I don't know much about the 5200 tbh.

SMS includes just the US sound chip. Sega Mark III is essentially a SMS with the FM sound chip.

It really sucks that I forgot to add X68000 to the poll and that you can't edit the entries after it's been created. It has a killer sound chip imo:

much better than Atari 2600 for sure :P

The 5200's sound chip was called "POKEY" The original Star Wars arcade used 2 of these for the music. The same chip was used in the Atari 8 Bit computers too.
