Anyone else get a nice warm nostalgic feeling about the clunky-ass graphics of the 32-bit generation and the computer games of that same time?

I'm talking the pixelated texture, 3D,"you can actually count the polygons", blocky graphics of the PS1, Saturn, N64, Jaguar, and 3DO.

Not necessarily a nostalgia for the games themselves, but a nostalgia for the graphics. They've not help up well, but they've held a place in my heart.

I do have good nostalgic feelings for the PS1 and 3DO for the games but honestly for all the 32/64-Bit Gen I enjoyed games 'in-spite' of the graphics.

Now in my defense I'm one of the best people anyone can know when it comes to how little graphics matter to me. I'm never overly wowed by today's graphics nor am I one to disparage a game for underwhelming graphics.

BUT....I really never liked 32-bit graphics even back in '94-'96 when they first emerged. I thought they looked blocky in a bad way then and still liked the 8-Bit and 16-bit stuff better. As time has moved on they have aged worse than any gens graphics IMHO. Some of the RPG's still looked pretty okay....but Action-y games, Platformers, and Fighting games look godawful.

I look a that Gen as a necessary evil in the evolution of graphics. It took trial and error innovating in the 32/64 bit gen to get to the 128 bit gen of the PS2,XBOX,GC, and DC which still look pretty good to me.

I get nostalgic for those old graphics every time I see something related to Super Mario 64, which I remember seeing being played even when I was a boy of six.

The flat coins in a 3-D environment, the adult Bowser that wound up looking like a plus-sized baby Bowser, Mario's diamond-shaped nose. Those were the days.

But when it comes to 32-bit graphics like those of StarFox 64, those are just dizzying, even sickening.

It may actually be the last generation where i actually loved console gaming, there was so much original games around and everyone was trying something new. 3D was quite a new concept to a lot of developers and observing all their attempts to get to grips with it and make great games is interesting in itself. Even the games that are generally considered bad can be quite entertaining at the end of the day. I never thought i would see games like Alone in the Dark, Theme Hospital, C&C or Civilization on a console, and even though some of the ports were pretty bad i thought it was awesome that people could experience those games without a machine that would set them back 1000's.

I was mainly playing Playstation and PC back then, i was a big Sega kid growing up but the Saturn was just too expensive and didn't seem to have that much games in comparison. Most of my friends also went with Playstation so it was an "easy" decision. Looking back on Syphon Filter now is hilarious, but i remember that game blowing my mind when i first played the demo. Using a taser that set fire to people on rooftops was a hell of an experience for a teenager...

I'll have to agree with stratamaster78 on this one. 32-bit polygon graphics have aged the worst of any generation. I remember being blown away by Metal Gear Solid when it was first released. I thought it was amazingly realistic and an incredible graphical achievement for gaming. When I played it a few years ago, however, I was shocked at blocky it looked. Same goes for a lot of my first PS1 pickups. RPGs from that era, however, have stood the test of time pretty well in comparison to all other genres. That having been said, some games from that time do give me that warm feeling of nostalgia-Super Mario 64, Viruta Fighter 2, Ascii N64 wrestling games, etc.

Not trying to downplay the points you guys are making but the topic kind of shifted. I wasn't talking about how good or poor the graphics were, but how the blocky and clunky bad graphics from that generation were endearing and Nostalgic to some of us(myself included.)

Sorry I didn't mean to derail/shift the topic off point in any way I was just saying how I have both good nostalgic feelings yet bad ones at the same time. For me the graphics solely being charming depended on the genre of game because some age better than others in the 32-bit era. Most of the Shmups still look FANTASTIC and I do love them. The Saturn graphics were GREAT. If their is one area where I kind of like the Blocky Polygon stuff it's the RPG's but not much else.

I guess I just never did and never will love the 'Blocky/Clunky' graphics as a whole you are mainly referencing though. I love most of the games themselves but it's because I look past the graphics and latch onto the gameplay, story, and/or music.

I dunno....I'm probably not explaining myself well but I was just trying to say I appreciate a lot of things from the 32-bit era and recognize the graphics were an innovation to get to where we are now but at the same time just to me generally they never were appealing. So based on the thread title....I love the 32-bit era in an overall nostalgic way.
