Microsoft will unveil a $2.5 billion deal to buy its owner on Monday, according to a source briefed on the matter.

“It seems like Microsoft is looking at Mojang and Minecraft as a way to tap into this enormous cultural phenomenon," said Dave Bisceglia, Chief Executive of independent game studio Tap Lab. "If you look at iOS, Minecraft has been a top-grossing game for quite some time, if Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience that you can't get on the other platforms, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans.”

Crazyness! I would have thought Minecraft made the majority of its money by now considering that it has been released on everything. It sounds like it's a move to bolster up the Windows Phone. I guess they could make Minecraft 2 Electric Boogaloo but what else can they do with the game aside updating the graphics to garner that many people again!? What do you guys think, does anyone still play Minecraft around here?

Yeah, this sounds a little late... Unless Mojang has something up their sleeve.

I am not sure this is a good purchase at all. The train has left the depot and the software is on your competitors platform and doing well with a Vita version scheduled to release. I wonder if this is the foreshadowing of Microsoft conceding Xbox hardware and focusing on the Cloud and Software IP.

Minecraft 2 and it is Xbone exclusive maybe? It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense...

i'm not at all happy about this. I like Minecraft (quite a lot infact), and I don't see how this is going to be good for current fans of the game at all, infact I think this puts it's future in a lot of doubt. And that's the prevailing attitude amongst the majority of fans atm (apart from people who only play on 360 I suppose maybe). Imagine the "potential™"! Minecraft TWO! Paid content! Microsoft accounts! MOVIES! TVSHOWS! Eurgh.

The attitude of people not interested in the game at all seems mostly to be how strange of a deal it is and questioning just how much of a return they hope to make out of the deal.

What I want to know from the XBone fans on the forum (I think we have one or two) is how do you see this? Wouldn't you rather M$ have invested that money in to opening first party dev teams and funding new exclusives? To put it in to perspective, this is almost TEN times the TOTAL cost spent on GTA5, including global marketing.

Mojang is a successful company that has done amazing on it's own and it doesn't need a huge company like Microsoft to buy it. I don't believe Notch ever intended for Mojang to be as big as it currently is, nevermind if Microsoft buy it and just push 200 more employees into it and tell them what games they need to develop! I think for the sake of the games, employees and fans it should stay independent.

Absolutely. Hell, for $2.5 billion they probably could have made the Xbone more powerful lol. I think Minecraft is OK. I'm not a huge fan but I did buy it on 360 and upgraded for $5 on Xbone, but looking at the next year it's going to be pretty barren games wise. Halo Master Chief Collection, Halo 5, Forza Horizon 2, Crackdown 3, and maybe Quantum Break? Weak overall.

Although based on the article I really do think they are trying to prop up the Windows Phone and hope an exclusive Minecraft on mobile may do the trick...even though it's already on millions of iPhones/Androids. lol. I just don't get how Minecraft can sustain future growth with sooo many people already having it on something.

I hate minecraft but I hope that this purchase doesn't fuck over playstation players, bc if microsoft owns them they probably won't want their game to be available on their biggest competitors system so what if they shut down the servers for the game o playstation[or idk really how it works but you get what I mean]? what if this makes them cancel the vita version?

Well Microsoft did go through with it, they now own Minecraft. Sounds like Notch quit.

I bet they can't wait to play with their new "franchise".

Even IF current releases remain largely untampered, you can bet your ass they are going to want a "bigger™, better™" Microsoft endorsed Minecraft at some point.

But yeah, Notch quit, apparently that's the reason he sold and left. The tl;dr of his blog post is basically:

"I don't really care about Minecraft at this point. I don't like the attention I was getting personally. We might have had to engage in lawsuits, and I didn't want to do that myself. If I ever make anything remotely succesful again I'll likely abandon it again. I know the deal makes me look like a hypocrite, but 2.5billion is a lot of freaking money. I love you and stuff."

And some of it I really can't blame him for at all, geting flack for a situation that may end up with you being part of a big legal battle (for a product you don't really care about at this point) doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun. I'd probablt be out like a shot if I had the oppertunity. Still not happy about how this leaves the game at all though.

It seems a pretty odd company to be buying up Minecraft. The gouging out lots of money to buy something makes sense, it's MS at the end of the day, but i really wonder how this is gonna end up on Sony and Mobile devices. Are customers going to have to pay MS to play on Playstation? Are Xbox owners going to get the first and best add-ons and updates?

I'm pretty certain it will stay roughly the same on PC, they have a good market and situation there, but it's the recent consoles ports i think may have the problems. Will Sony and Apple even want it on their systems now? I'd rather have seen Valve buy it up, i think they would have kept on all the great work that has made it one of the most popular games it is today.

That's something I hadn't even considered. We can joke about HL3 all we want, but the way Valve develops games would have been a very nice fit with Mojang.
