Alright, I'll try condensing my thoughts, but I have so much to say. Right away, I can tell you this is the best multiplayer, online FPS every made. It's beyond incredible. There was GoldenEye, then Halo, Call of Duty 4, and now, there's Destiny. But why? Controls and Game Feel It's quite literally a mix of COD and Halo. I heard that some COD devs worked on this game, along with Bungie, so it's not surprising. Button mapping is almost identical to COD, but game feels like a fastened Halo. You can play jump, glide, float, crouch, slide, dance, point, and sit. More options are there without complicating the controls. Double tapping X (PS4) makes you glide, and depending on how you handle momentum (by running, standing still or falling), you can hit almost any target location within reason. Taunts are done with the D-pad, dancing is important, you hold three guns (hold down Triangle for third weapon rather than tapping), and melee is done by pressing R1. Abilities and Upgrading There's three classes, and each class has two subclasses. Abilities are done with the bumpers, or R1 and L1. Like COD, L1 will be your classes grenade. There's different types including spreads, energy draining, tracking explosions, fog, and more. R1 is your classes melee. Each class has difference ranges, effects, and power (still referring to melee). For example, Warlock shoots an energy pulse which has lots of range and energy draining effects. There's variant melee options for each subclass, too. Lastly, pressing L1 and R1 unleashes a "Super Charge" (takes a lot of time to charge) which is basically an auto kill move. The Warlock's makes him jump and shoot an energy ball in third person. It's like using a free grenade launcher, basically. Because of these differences, Destiny is much more nuanced than COD or Halo. Upgrading's huge too. You upgrade each subclass which gives you more options for melee, grenade, Super Charge, and changing the balance of Agility, Armor, and recovery. Map Design Best map design since COD4. They're open enough so you don't feel crammed, but they're confined enough that you can get into a gun fight within seconds. It's hard to explain with playing it for yourself. My favorite map is First Light. Single player This single player in meant to complement the multiplayer rather than be a game of its own. This isn't Borderlands. This isn't Skyrim. It's different, unique, but borrows elements from different titles. You only play this mode to upgrade yourself, play COOP, or practice with new firearms. This is NOT an MMO, and should not be compared so. This single player should be compared to Halo or COD, where it's about the story and what else is added. What else benefits and improves your multiplayer experience. That is Destiny. About the reviews... The game is better than how it reviewed. It's way better than Metacritic's 76. This is mainly because it was thought to be Skyrim where you could also play multiplayer, whereas it's actually a more nuanced Call of Duty. It's not that it's mediocre, it's that it's being compared and judged on the wrong premise. It's like calling Mario Kart mediocre for not being realistic enough, when in all actuality, it's just Mario Kart. It's not meant to be realistic. It's really a phenomenal game and HIGHLY recommend you try it out! |

People did compare it to something like Skyrim co-op/single player because that's how it was advertised and shown to us. As an enormous space opera ala Halo or Mass Effect spanning the solar system that you can explore with your friends, with basically Halo's multiplayer added in. Instead we just get bare bones storytelling and repetitive missions that you'd find in an MMO. I mean most missions just involve you going to the same area you just visited, unlocking a computer, and killing waves of enemies that attack you. Occasionally a bulky blumbering raid boss shows up that you can always outrun that takes forever to kill. It's just boring really. Good review though. Now I haven't played much of the multiplayer because to me it feels like Halo 4 which I didn't like in multiplayer, but I'll be sure to try it out some more based on you comparing it to COD4. I'm glad you're enjoying it though. |
