So I've had this thing since day one and I'll give you my thoughts.

This is not much more, currently, than a Playstation Vita that connects to your TV. As an owner of an Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast I will say that if you are buying the PSTV as a media playing device that happens to remote to the PS4 or play Vita games then look elsewhere. I highly recommend the Amazon Fire TV for that duty. This is a gaming device first and foremost. I haven't watched Crunchyroll on it beyond the initial few days.

In a nutshell media right now is not the focus. I can't really disagree with this since every damned thing on the planet these days can play Netflix.

The user experience is essentially a Vita on a television that has a resolution that seems a bit odd on a 50" TV. The controls for it aren't so bad, the Dual Shock 3 navigates the Vita OS despite it originally being built for a touch screen. You you essentially take your Vita memory card and pop it in the TV and not skip a beat. That... is really fucking cool.

PS4 Remote Play:

I cannot really speak too much about this. I live the bachelor life so I don't get aggro from others if I wanna play PS4 I play it and I don't care too much to play the PS4 from my bed so I haven't really tried this out. I don't really use the functionality of the Wii U as a second screen either. But... from what I have read it works great especially if you are on a fast wireless or wired network. I've seen videos on YT of games being played and it looked great. Maybe at some point this feature will be a bargain for me but now its just a nice to have.

Games:

Well Sword Art Online now plays on it now! This was a fast turnaround as it didn't play it day 1. I am listening to the character creation screen right now on my TV as I type. Huzzah. Persona 4 looked slightly worse than the PS2 game in terms of graphics but the art work overlays and the music were crystal clear. Graphics on this system you must understand were built to the small screens resolution. Some games may not degrade but others will. This is a time where you really have to put ease of use over graphics whoring or you will come away disappointed sometimes.

Indy Games look pretty darn good. They play perfectly so far. Mutant Mudds and Pix the Cat were very fun to play. If you have a PS3 and cross buy then I have to say the PSTV may be a novelty if all you play are Indie titles.

PSP games are hit and miss too: Corpse Party 1 looks pretty terrible when looking at the sprites. It doesn't look this bad when playing on the PSP3000 outputing through RGB because it keeps the resolution intact most of the time. Here it is pretty upscaled so sprite based games can get muddy if they have age on them. Other games look ok albeit with aliasing standing out a lot.

So what does the best of the best graphically impressive games for the Vita look like on it? Say... Killzone Mercenaries? Well it looks good. Looks real good. Could easily have been a 2007 PS3 FPS. Sometimes it even shows up its PS3 brethren when looking at landscapes (think... what if there was some Killzone Shadowfall scenes in KZ3 and you wouldn't be too far off). But the controls I am having a bit of a struggle with. The Dual Shock 3 at least doesn't do the mele system in this game well. I will try to get one of my DS4's on it to see if there are any remaps later.

Overall Opinion:

I bought this device for two reasons: to do recordings at some point for my YT channel for PSP/Vita titles and to play some select games on the couch like Sword Art Online. I feel my purchase is justified for the most part. But I don't know if I can recommend this to just anyone... yet. If your reasons line up with mine then 100 bucks isn't that big of deal just make sure the game(s) you want to play are white listed. If you have a PS3 and don't have a vita and want to play some PS+ titles that are vita only then again... this opens up a lot of gaming to you and 100 bucks is still imho a good deal. But if you have a PS3 and don't give 2 shits about the vita then you can invest in an apple tv or amazon fire tv and you'd probably be the better person for it. The PSTV might not be made for you.

Overall its a pretty niche product and I am not sure where they are going with it just yet and I hope for the future for the product has massive potential. It just may not fit everyone's checklist right now.

Playongo ( a fucking awsome YTer if you never heard of him ) has a great video on it: Playongo's Review

Totally off topic I know but you mentioned liking the Amazon Fire TV. I'm really considering getting one of those because I'm pretty involved in Amazon's ecosystem already. Anything you can add to why you like that? :p

I'm not too interested in PS TV but I also have PS3, PS4, and Vita so I'm good with Sony for the time being lol.

Amazon Fire TV is the best android device I've ever used. The user interface is gorgeous and easy to use. The amount of content inside the ecosystem as you probably know is extensive, but outside the ecosystem they support pretty much everything. It is fast. I mean hands down it is the fastest device like it I've ever used. I gave one to my 56y.o. uncle who is a technophobe... and he uses the voice command every day. It is also his primary way of watching TV except for live TV.

It is quite honestly the best 100 dollar device on the market considering the build quality and the speed imho. It also has android / fire games too if that is one's thing.

You can go into the setting and change the resolution from Automatic to 720p, 1080, or 480p. I believe the PSP is 480. The only digital PSP game I have is Killzone: Liberation. I am not going to say that it doesn't look a little ruff but I think it looks fairly good, at lease it did better then I was expecting.

I feel like my end conclusion about the system is about that same as your but maybe some of the detail are differently. I am not as high on the interface as you. It is perfectly serviceable but it is a interface designed for a touchscreen and there has to be a better way then what they are doing here. I feel like they just need to do a complete rehaul of this. I don't want to seem too negative on the interface because it does work but I feel like there are ways to do it much better. I would also put out there if don't have a Roku, Fire TV, Etc I think this is a reasonable multi media device. If you are interested in the game part of the system I see no reason it wouldn't work just fine as a multi media device too. I however will agree with hooflung128 if you are looking for a multi media device first and form most you can do better than this.

I don't want to have to change resolutions for each game. That is silly and should be baked into the system by default when it tries to play older games. I do agree that the UI not being made for HD is a niggle and it is completely usable. The problem is when you compare it to other devices like the Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV then it looks amateur at best but like you said if you are going after couch PSP/V gaming then its not a big deal at all.

The only problem with it being a Media device right now is it doesn't have many media applications. So even if it did play the role well, and it will I have no doubt, it doesn't do it currently.
