I've recently begun playing the Evil Within. I have never forayed into "horror" games before and have found, much to my own surprise that I love the mechanics of the genre. You are required to think in order to progress, You must solve problems while under pressure, You have limited resources at your disposal, Boss fights are more than just damage sponges.

I'm looking for recommendations to further my journey into the genre. I really have had no exposure to these types of games and am delighted that I have found a whole untapped genre that I enjoy.

I'm really enjoying The Evil Within too. Two games right off the bat would be Resident Evil 4, and Siren Blood Curse on PS3 if you're enjoying that game. I think the person who made EW also did RE4, and Siren has a similar vibe.

Silent Hill HD Collection (comes with 2 & 3) Preferably get it on PS3 since the 360 one didn't get an update that fixes some of the issues with it.

Silent Hill 1, Shattered Memories, and Downpour. I personally didn't like 4 or Homecoming.
Amnesia (Steam)
Fatal Frame Series
Zombi U
Condemned 1. The sequel sucks in comparison.

I think the patch for the PS3 version fixed issues with framerate and sound hiccups, but I guess people hate the Silent Hill collection because they altered parts of the game such as the voice acting, environmental effects, and certain cutscenes. So basically if you've never played the games before you won't have as many problems as the fans do.

I played SH 2&3 for the first time with the 360 collection and aside from an audio issue pop up a few times, and the achievements being funky I didn't have many issues with it. Silent Hill 3 was really creepy. Just keep in mind with most horror games the controls are pretty janky.

Here's a comparison video. It's weird the lighting and some environmental effects are better on PS2 lol.

Ds Games!

I'm a big fan of Resident Evil 2 and 3. If you can get used to the controls I think you'd enjoy them.

Yup, as said the PS3 version of the SH HD collection plays quite well now it has been patched. Konami actually offered full refunds for the 360 version months after release because they found themselves unable to fix that version. Pretty crazy. The original voice acting is still there for SH2 if you would prefer to use it, but the new dub is mandatory for SH3, something about not being able to get the rights again I think. Is you play them, SH2 can be played on it's own really well, but if you want to play 3 I recommend you go through the original game first.

If you want to give Resident Evil a shot, REmake is being released in HD next year, and is my favourite in the series bar none. It nails the atmosphere perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot1-xyvE_8A

After that... the Siren Series is a good call, as is Fatal Frame.

God damn it I want to play Evil Within lol

No complaints so far, its great.

The only thing I can see putting me off on the genre is the clunky controls inherent with the earlier games. A lot of people seem to think that the controls are necessary for a horror game and I just can't get behind that particular sentiment.

Me neither but that's just the way horror games seem to be unfortunately :[ My biggest issue with The Evil Within is just the damn black bars. Fucking hell they're enormous. The game is great but it really bothers me that 1/3 of the screen is just black bars.

I really like the bars, it makes it really tense. I'm kinda upset that the stealth is going away as you progress in the game.

I thought they made a patch that got rid of the black bars since everyone was hating them.

It depends on how broadly you want to interpret the word "horror", but I'd definitely make RE4 the next game on your list. It's not the scariest game you'll play but it did perfect the balance between action, puzzle and narrative imo. It sadly ended up derailing the series, but you can just ignore that fact for the sake of playing the game.

I don't think i've ever been scared by a video game and thats not what i'm playing these games for. But by all accounts it looks like either resident evil or silent hill will be my next game.

Update: The Evil Within has been beaten. Great game, terrible final boss. Hopefully thats not a trend in the genre.

Anyways Silent Hill 1 will be my next foray.

I got through the hospital and to the antique store. By then the wine and whiskey was making it hard to stay awake. I really enjoyed what I played. Pretty fun running around shooting pterodactyls and midgets. I haven't been creeped out or frightened at all yet but I think i'm only a third or so through the game. I'm liking the focus being on puzzle solving, although two puzzles were kinda unintuitive and required me to check a guide. (the piano one and the drain on the roof.)

Just finished, I enjoyed it but can definitely see its age, point and click inspired puzzles and a very disappointing final boss. The ending was also very strange as it was basically just him crying after killing the final boss. It makes sense I suppose but I was expecting a little more than him falling to his knees and then credits.

Onwards and upwards though, it would seem that Silent Hill 2 is the best in the series by the acclaim it has received.

Oh there is a post credit scene, man I forgot how terrifying early cg could be.

Since this is the most relevant horror topic here I was wondering what the fascination is with Five Nights at Freddy's? I don't get it. It shattered my ear drums but aside from that it's not scary at all. It's just robotic teddy bears and incredibly loud audio :/

I'm glad you dug it. I can understand why you would find the puzzles a bit too obtuse, luckily I think i'd probably be able to remember them if I played it myself now. By the sound of it you got the worst ending btw lol :P The Good ending is the canon lead in to SH3, so you should look it up before you play that :)

SH2 is definately my favourite, hope you dig it :)

I don't get it either man, the fact that there's already a third coming blows my mind.
