I've recently begun playing the Evil Within. I have never forayed into "horror" games before and have found, much to my own surprise that I love the mechanics of the genre. You are required to think in order to progress, You must solve problems while under pressure, You have limited resources at your disposal, Boss fights are more than just damage sponges.

I'm looking for recommendations to further my journey into the genre. I really have had no exposure to these types of games and am delighted that I have found a whole untapped genre that I enjoy.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is one of the best horror games ever. It's a creepy, atmosphere ridden game that is just absolutely wonderful, especially if you're a fan of HP Lovecraft.

One semi-hidden Gem I can recommend that people often forget about is Alan Wake. It does have the creepy TV series/Twin Peaks feel to it but it's also classic survival horror in it's gameplay.

There isn't gore here but rather deep psychological scares. The best way I can describe its effects is that I was always tight and nervous playing the game. It has such a feeling of dread and suspense but I never jumped because it doesn't really go for cheap jump scares. I did however have crazy nightmares for the few weeks I was playing it...

It's a really GREAT horror game.

Oh man Resident Evil Remake HD is coming out this month. Definitely get that! It's seriously one of the best horror games ever. The tank controls are a bit of a bitch but apparently it has a new control scheme :)

I played Alan Wake but didn't think it was a horror game. I was actually very bored playing it as I was never surprised or scared or challenged throughout the entire game.

Did anyone end up getting the DLC for this game?

Man, this game is so much better than Resident Evil Revelations 2 :/ Mediocrity written all over it in every way, combat, graphics, everything. I want this team to make Resident Evil.

Thought I'd necro this thread to see if there's any interest in Until Dawn which looks like a cool horror game. It comes out tomorrow and is getting pretty decent reviews. Seems to be around an 8/10.

I'd buy it but according to GameTrailers there's no inverted controls :[ I'm weird and need that stuff. Really hoping they patch it to support that. I can't really play Silent Hill Homecoming either due to that.

I am interested in it. My friend and I, that I work with, have been talking about Until Dawn off and on for the last month or so. I'm a fan of horror movies so it's right up my alley. He's picking it up today. I want to get it but I may just wait and borrow it from him (I'm letting him borrow Bloodborne and Alien) or wait for a price drop. I will play it eventually just not sure what I'm going to do yet. I probably (maybe) wouldn't finish it before Metal Gear comes out and that's priority #1 for me.

We go from not a lot of games (that I want to play for PS4) to ALMOST too many all of a sudden, lol. Mad Max looks good and I'm a Tony Hawk fan and that comes out late September.

^ Too many games is a great problem to have! :D It's at Redbox so I'm hoping I can find it tomorrow. The more I read about this game it really sounds like a cheesy somewhat scary teen horror flick which I'm on board for. The no inverted controls really scares me away from buying it though.

Nearly bought it today with Gears of War HHD.

Evil Within is hardly a good representation of the survival horror genre, as it's more of a third person shooter/action game with horror elements like Resident Evil. Anyways
Pure horror games (in a descending order rated by "scaryness"):
Amnesia the Dark Descent (often considered the scariest horror game)
Penumbra: Overture&Penumbra: Black plague
Fatal Frame 1&2
Resident Evil Remake
Call of Cthulu: Dark corners of the Earth
System Shock 2 (survival horror/FPS-RPG hybrid)
Clock Tower
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's requiem
I have no Mouth and I must Scream&Scratches (Psychological horror point&click games, not really games where you have to fight against monsters)

Action games with horror like athmosphere/sections
Thief the Dark Project and Thief: Deadly Shadows (latter one has one of scariest missions in any game called The shalebridge cradle, though its best you go in it blind with out spoiling yourself)
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
Resident Evil 2&3, Code Veronica and Zero (2>3>0/Code Veronica, depending on wihch you prefer)
Resident Evil 4 (it's a third person action game
F.E.A.R
S.T.A.L.K.E.R series
Bloodborne

And naturally you have to check out Silent Hill 2&3 as well. 4 if you feel like it, but stay clear of ones made after that one.
