Today I picked up my second amiibo, after just getting my first one yesterday. I'm intrigued, but very cautious about buying more of these, cause I feel like I would burn a hole in my wallet if I keep buying so many at a time. So, I think I'm going to take my time with buying only one a week from now on. Anyways, how is the amiibo hunting been going pgrf?

This amiibo nonsense is gross beyond measure. The way some grown-ass people have been behaving around these ridiculous little toys is ridiculous.

http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2015/01/29/totally-realise-amiibos-popular

They're kids toys.
You're adults.
Stop it.

You're artificially creating rarity and value here, you're just buying these products and keeping them sealed for absolutely no reason whatsoever. It's literally gunna get to the point that the number of sealed products will outnumber the opened and used.

The worst thing, is you're pandering to your sense of nostalgia by hoarding these trinkets, while quite literally stopping kids from creating their own little memories of playing with these toys.

Wait and see, kids won't be able to get ahold of the Duck Hunt Dog when it's inevitably released, because people are hoarding multiple copies, chasing some fucked up perception of rarity and value.

Fucking assholes.

^ Stop being a cunt.

People can do whatever they want with what they purchase with their money. If they want to keep them sealed than that's their prerogative. I hate resellers too, but for the most part no one on this forum is buying them for that reason so who cares if they want to buy them since chances are they grew up with these characters and have an appreciation for them. Considering you have a Yoshi stuffed animal, bought two Wii U's and kickstarted a game for over $150 dollars I wouldn't be criticizing others' purchasing decisions.

So wait is a used amiibo with more than a sealed one then? Quick everyone open up your amiibo and sell them on ebay, no wait if everyone opens them up then the sealed ones are worth more. O I see what you are doing here AndsyRR, you are part of the problem.

I think I have already voiced my displeasure on how this whole thing has played out, so I am not really going to go into in again. But in defense of people buying sealed copies of them, toy collecting is a think just like video game collecting. It is not just amiibo, there are plenty of toy lines that people buy toys just to own them and have no intention of playing with it. I am a 30 year old man that watches cartoons and plays Viva Piñata, I am hardly in a position to judge what should act as a mature adult hobby. My guess is a lot of other people on the forum would be in a similar position.

Would someone call Michaelangelo's David a toy? What about a scaled down reproduction of it? These are reprinted statues, not toys, they're not pose-able, and honestly the usage of them is as extraneous as you could get, thus far. If this is meant for anyone, it's for the Adults who want to collect and decorate their living space with memorabilia. You don't know how often I've read people saying they wanted to buy some figures to decorate their office space. What can a kid do with these figures? Not much to write home about, and even if they wanted a character to use their imagination with, there's already the various Nintendo dolls and Jakk's Pacific toy line for them to get their hands on. Is there anything wrong with an adult collecting figures with articulation either? No, I like my figmas and nendoroids and don't give a damn what anyone thinks. If it's anyone's fault for what's going on, it's Nintendo of America for being incompetent at responding to the demand, and for the retailers who wont establish a one per customer rule for each unique figure.

I’ll weight in with my two cents here. The Amiibo craze has exploded over the past few months and a collector’s market has emerged, which is not a surprise considering that Nintendo products tend to attract a loyal and rabid fanbase. Consequently, this makes many of them difficult to obtain and this is where we get the grey market resellers who charge ridiculous prices. I think Andy’s main point is that this makes it difficult for younger gamers to get the figures they want, so if his daughter wanted a Marth Amiibo, she would be shit out of luck because they would be long gone. It sucks, and many Nintendo fans share his pain. Most people I know were unable to get the Majora’s Mask 3DS and it burns them to see eBay sellers trying to turn a profit.

I feel that the blame lies, as MidiPour pointed out, with Nintendo for producing enough of a product to meet the demand. Either this is incompetence or a strategic move to build hype and ensure that future “waves” of Amiibos pay dividends for the company. I’m guessing it’s a bit of both. Residual blame lies with the retailers for allowing people to buy excessive quantities and people who buy from resellers, as they enable this grey market that continuously jilts legitimate fans. I don’t feel that fans and collectors are at fault, though. They have a right to indulge in their hobby of choice, and I frankly don’t care what they do with their toys and games. They can keep them sealed, open them, eat them or grind them up and snort them with a rolled up dollar bill. I don’t consider myself the arbiter of what others should do with the stuff they buy. Their money, their choice.

As for my own opinion on Amiibos, they look cool, but I don't get the rabid fanfare that they're getting. Mind you, I never saw the appeal of Skylanders either.

I don't understand who you are directing all of this at.

Adults buying amiibo are NOT the reason "kids won't be able to get ahold of the Duck Hunt Dog." Yes, there are select "grown-ass" men who ruin it for the rest of us by hoarding tons of the same amiibo, but what is even more "gross beyond measure" is that you are trying to generalize all adults under this statement, which is completely farce.

Even worse, you act like you should have any say in what people buy with their own money (certainly not when it doesn't cause any harm). You're perception of what adults should and should not do is very outdated and childish. You are part of a community dedicated to video games; I would think that you would be more accepting of other interests, related to gaming or not.

It's weird how you aimlessly bash Nintendo for so many stupid things, but don't place the blame on them when it is very clearly an issue of insufficient production of amiibo. Adults who are passionate about collecting them shouldn't have to stop getting amiibo just so little Timmy can get a Duck Hunt Dog, and little Timmy shouldn't stop getting amiibo just so adults can get them. It's the same as any product, there is always the poison that is re-sellers.

I was questioning whether I should compare David to the art of an Amiibo, but not on the basis you were. Well, I'm presuming your argument is on the basis of the imagery and childishness, which has too much subjectivity going to be of any value. Consider the fact that I know people who think anime like Cowboy Bebop is for teens and under, and how I should be into sports; it's a social construct with no psychological basis as to what's wrong with an adult consuming the medium. Maybe I could see where you're coming from with craft, but that's a mixed bag as you could easily find a well-crafted Amiibo if you searched well enough

Now, with why I was on the fence. I don't necessarily condone the idea of comparing a historical piece of 'art' to something that's produced for the masses. However, I do like to believe that the concept artist/illustrator who works on these games had some autonomy to be expressive of their own unique ideas with these figures. Sometimes I feel game art is great, whereas in other cases it's bland and feels produced.

For instance, let's compare the Smash Amiibo to what I consider sterile Super Mario line.

Even though I think the Super Mario line is sterile, I still understand it's subjective and someone else might have a different impression.

"It's weird how you aimlessly bash Nintendo..."

That my friend, is your first and only clue needed to help you figure out how much of a fanboy you are. To discredit every criticism I have had as 'aimless' is THE very reason I'm so obnoxious and verbal. But alas, some shit just wont change.

As for the other points, I cant dictate to people what they should, and shouldnt spend their money on. You're 100% right on that. But I know of a few parents who havent been able to get their kids their amiibo of choice because they sell out instantly - but i chose not to focus on the obvious scummy tactics that both nintendo and resellers are engaged in. My bad.

I just find the whole shit around amiibos petty and rather embarassing. maybe on par with waifu pillows. :p

This further corroborates what I was thinking, "How "kid friendly" are these toys?"

"They are not durable. They WILL break easily."

"Obligatory "they are not toys, they're figures".
I don't think they were made to be played with. More of a display unit."

"My 6 year old plays with his and the only one that has broken has been Little Mac. I know he was playing with them and his wrestling ring. He also leaves them on the floor and couch frequently. That said if they are something you would be devasted that they broke, then you need to put them away out of reach. My son only has: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Little Mac, Pikachu, Kirby. and Link."

Indeed. If we were going to start getting into to blanket statements/sterotypes, Andsy would be right in the middle of the virgin basement dwelling neckbeard group, since he plays video games that aren't Call of Duty.

Only virgin nerds, right, we get that your arguments rely entirely on generalization and stereotyping.

It also makes it easier if you just call Nintendo fans "fanboys" to try to make their points seem less valid. Great intelligent discussion you're having here.

Duck Hunt Dog hasn't released or been announced with the current set of waves, and will probably release by the end of spring or summertime. There's either 1-3 waves left in the Smash Bros line of Amiibo, with 35 released/unveiled so far. If you're curious as to what has released, check the Amiibo wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiibo
