The Order 1886: Are the media reviews justified?; Is this just a mediocre PS4 exclusive?

I just finished The Order 1886 about an hour ago. When I was done I was left with many questions.... Mind you none of the questions were the ones I was expecting...

"Was the game too short?" "Was the game too boring?" "Was it worth picking up for full price?" When I was done, none of these questions were ones that came to my mind. Instead it was.. "why did did some people give this a 2/10 or even a 5/10?" "What justifies giving a game a score that low?" "Am I missing something here?"

Let's start with what for some reason seems to be the major question surrounding this game. Is it too short? Well it depends on what type of gamer you are. For me it took just short of seven hours to complete (I had an issue with one mission which I'll get to in a minute). This is about 3.5 hours short of what it took me to complete Uncharted 2. I compare the length of The Order to to Uncharted 2 for two separate reasons. Reason one... while Uncharted 2 had multiplayer... I had absolutely no interest in playing it. In fact, I only played the single player the entire time I have owned the game. Reason two... Not since Uncharted 2 has a game captured my interest enough to keep me playing the entire way through from beginning to end in one sitting. I'm an older gamer now and time is expensive to me. It takes a lot for a game to not only get me interested enough to play it but to keep me interested long enough to finish it. I felt that the length of The Order was just perfect. There are collectibles to obtain, pictures to view and newspaper articles to read. I'm not one to sit and listen to the recorded messages that are collected or read through all of the newspapers but if you do and want a true completionist experience with this game I could easily see it taking 10 or so hours to complete. I did achieve 62% of the trophies in the game and still missed the majority of the collectibles.

Another major knock I have seen about this game is that it can become boring and repetitive third person shooter. While I agree that there are moments of repetition in the shooting throughout the game, that did not leave me feeling the game wasn't fun. I had a blast shooting down hoards of enemies with the different weapon types. I will say that I was a little upset as to the number of weapons that were available throughout the game. However, the weapon types that were built by the developers in this fantasy world were all fantastic and fun to use. There is no better feeling than disintegrating your enemies with a gun that shoots bolts of lightening across the map.

I do have to agree with some critical reviews about the quick time events. They are far to present in the game. Some of them could be justified but certain important scenes in the game are entirely made up of long periods of quick time events. I would have liked to have had more control of my character. But I will say this... like most other gruesome games with quick time events, it is quite a pleasurable experience when you do pull them off.

The only other negative thing I have to say about the game is that I didn't like the stealth missions. To me they seemed to sensitive and took way longer to complete than they should have. Maybe I just like to run and gun to much but I found that the moment available to sneak attack a guard was a little to short.

Other than these gripes... I actually really enjoyed the game. I thought it was a perfect length for the story it was trying to tell. In fact, I though the story was one of the strong points for the game. It kept me wanting to learn more about this fantasy version of England in the 1800's and all of the characters that inhabit it. And of course lets not forget the visuals... this is hands down the best looking game on PS4 in my opinion. The lighting is incredible, the character faces are unreal, and the architecture seen from the rooftops is absolutely beautiful. While the score for the game didn't have any tracks that were memorable, they certainly were not bad by any means. And the voice acting was absolutely top notch. They did a fantastic job with everyone of the voices for each and every character. Hell even the NPCs wandering around town sounded great.

People are entitled to give a game whatever score they see fit but some of the scores posted by major media companies are absolutely ridiculous. Is the game perfect? No... Is it linear? Yeah, but what third person shooter isn't these days. Is it just a playable movie? Sort of.. but I enjoyed it more than most movies these days! I thought this was a great start for a franchise that could see some awesome improvements for the next game! Do I feel that my 60 dollars was worth it? To me it was. I had a great time playing it!

My score:
8/10

I really liked it too and would give it an 8.5 :]

I thought the story was good but it really didn't pick up at all until the later half of the game. I mean the first half if you think about it not a whole lot happens. It's just a group of people going from one point to the next and reacting to what they're experiencing at that moment, but man the acting and characters were all really great!

I also loved what few weapons were there. That lightning bolt gun you mentioned was epic, the rocket launcher sequence was awesome, and my favorite gun was that Thermite Rifle where you'd shoot it all over the enemy and torch them :D The sniping was also outstanding and so fast and fluid!

I'm just kind of upset with Sony for spoiling what was my favorite part of the game. That whole hospital sequence where the Lycan is hunting you down was so well done and so intense, yet they showed it last year at E3 :/ That part was by far the most immersive part of the game for me even before you find the Lycan.

I can see why reviewers don't like it since it takes control away from you a lot and has a lot of QTE events, but my complaints are few and far between. This game has a similar setup to Ryse which I also enjoyed a lot.

Good review penny :]

I had it preordered, cancelled it due to all the negativity. I think I'm going to pick it up this week though so I can have my own opinion. I single player focused game is exactly what I want right now.

I feel like people are still trying to find THAT GAME to justify the buying or owning of the new consoles. This is a problem for both XboxOne and PS4 exclusives, anything less than that isn't good enough. It is an idea that really needs to stop, I don't think it really holds up these days.

This is so dead on... what people always forget is that typically with each new console it takes about 1.5 to 2 years before you see the games developed entirely with the new system in mind. Then another year before they really can take full advantage of the hardware.

This was a great game for the beginning of the life cycle of a new console. It won't hold up to the games released down the line but you need to review the game by how it feels at the time of release.

I just don't see how you could go any lower than a 6 on a review of this game.

Well I picked up the order. I was listening to some podcasts while driving around town today and they had nothing but bad things to say about the game. While I can't defend the game just yet I don't understand the immediate hatred the game gets just for being shorter than your average game. Most games have way too much filler. I do not mind games having very focused narrative with a lack extraneous activities.

Will post later tonight with my first impressions.

I'd say for those who would like to wait for a price drop... the game is certainly worth investing at the 40 dollar price point if you have questions about it. It should hit that within the next few months too.

Well the flaccid penis count is at 2 right now, I wasn't quite expecting a bunch of dicks in this game but whatever. I am really enjoying the game so far and have no idea what drugs the polygon reviewer was smoking when they claimed that the story was weak.

"The story, which gets progressively more disjointed as the game continues, is also poorly told, with conversations fluidly swinging from cliche to cliche, like a sort of hackneyed Tarzan.

But the real sin of The Order: 1886 isn't its shoddy storytelling or regrettable dialogue. No, the real problem is that it's all so incredibly boring."

-Justin McElroy, Polygon Reviewer

Suffice it to say I disagree with his review so far. My biggest question is how the hell did the guys who previously made the psp god of war games pull this off? This game is gorgeous. I'm loving the weapons, the secondary attacks on some of them really remind me of resistance. I'm stoping to eat supper but will be coming right back to this after.

hmm. I liked it.

I like the themes they touched on with the whole true nature of evil etc...

I'm honestly upset that it ended where it did. I wanted more of my questions answered. Guess I'll have to wait for the inevitable sequel.

P.S: about 6-6.5 hours for me

Think I watched the first half hour of the game and it didn't grab me, which is partially because it was at the end of the night and I had passed out right after I stopped watching. Doesn't seem terrible as some review sites with inflated overall scores would imply. But I don't know, am I missing out by not playing this game?.. So far I would say no, and think this game is totally watch-able via playthrough, probably not as a let's play though.

Probably will try to watch more tonight, I need hella motivation though.

The game looks like it has great production value and a good story, but the gameplay looks kinda meh to me, from what I've seen.

I'd think 6.5-7.5/10 and maybe up would be warranted. 2/10 just because its short? get the fuck out of here. This isn't DNF, and even that didn't deserve a 2/10.
