Recently i have been doing a lot of research on building or restoring an arcade cabinet to house a mame box. I've decided to give it a whirl. I dont have any power tools at my new place yet so the cabinet housing will be the last thing I do. Being the old pc gamer and tech junkie that I am, I decided to build a novelty box to that will run the cab. The PS4 and XBone both have a similar cpu so I decided to go with the jaguar based cpu theme of those boxes and use an AMD Kabini cpu @2.05ghz and 8gb ddr3 1600 to be the foundation. The pros: cost, power savings and performance to power. Mame doeant really need too much and the Kabini SoC even just using the built in graphics should be more than enough. The cons: Even mobos for AM1 socket for Kabini that have the full 16x pci-e slot can onlu run it at 4x mode. The best upgrade you can do that i'snt wasteful is an AMD 77x0 equivalent or a Nvidia 750ti equivalent. The best you are looking with an aftermarket GPU at 1080p gaming is medium at 60fps or high at 30fps. Because this is mame and Ihave other pcs for hardcore pc gaming this wasnt an issue; but keep this in mind if you want a steam indie box out of the same tech too if you do something similar. Also it [Kabini] only has 2 sata 3 connections; thus, that is a two hd or 1 hd 1 optical setup without resorting to trying to use usb3. I am also going windows 8.1 64bit. I dont like the opensource drivers in linux atm and linux 4.0 isnt out yet so latest mesa with modern features for amd is not easily obtainable for the goal of this project. I am not using nvidia and catalyst linux drivers are a pain to install sometimes. Windows will do and dx12 will be obtainable w free win10 upgrade. Here is a rundown of my parts: AMD kabini 5350 cpu Asrock Am1B-M AMD ddr3 1600mhz ram Intel 530 ssd for os Western Digital 1tb green hd Vanatec usb 3.0 pci-e 1x card Antec 450w basiq psu Fractal node 804 case Windows 8.1 I could have built this pc several different ways but I wanted to go novelty with the Jaguar CPU so please keep this in mind. I also got the SSD and Case considerably lower than those linked prices on Black Friday of last year and they literally were sitting there unopened from that time. I also had the 1TB drive already as well and I got that on a great deal from Bestbuy last year. I will tackle the housing and the stick situation later. Not sure if I will go tank stick or make my own deck. Edited by hooflung128, Mar 5 2015, 03:55 PM.
