Are you going to get a Steam machine/similar console?

Does a Steam machine sound appealing to anyone here? What do you think of Valve's controller for it?

I really want a Steam machine but I have no idea what to buy. Right now I think the AlienWare Alpha looks the best, but I think waiting to see what Valve has may be the better option. I don't really want to fuck around with building a PC so one of these is perfect for me so I can play Old Republic, WoW, and Civ V.

There's some really bizarre ones coming out though like the Nvidia Shield console...I don't see the point of that one. I played the handheld one and aside from the great graphics the design and interface were really bad :/

The steam machines are a complete and utter ripoff. Just build your own, it's not hard.

I personally don't see the value proposition in Steam machines. My technical ability is middling at best, but I have had no problems building my own PCs and nothing beats the value of doing that. Why pay some of the insane prices that boutique makers like Falcon Northwest, et. al. are charging when you can building an awesome PC for less. At the same time, why waste $500 on a box that will match or slightly outperform the consoles now, but will be grossly underpowered in the PC world? And even if you wanted one for a home theater application, you could build a better HTPC for less, or just use Valve's Steam Extender for $50, which will be a good deal.

Based on then prices I have seen I feel like I could just order a complete gaming PC from newegg or triggerdirect for cheaper and just install steam on that.

Also I feel like Valve totally screwed this up. First all the momentum they had last year has been sucked away. Secondly I feel like they needed to set some kind of guidelines on what this things are instead of the do anything distributors want approach they have.

What would be the average you'd spend building a PC to get similar specs to what they're offering? Maybe this summer I'll tinker around with something I just find it very intimidating.

Yeah agreed Unclever it's a clusterfuck. I thought it would be like Valve at the front like a Microsoft or Sony but it's just a bunch of random machines coming out sporadically.

Gamer. Graphic Designer. Geek.

I'm definitely interested in all of the new SteamOS stuff going on, but I think I'm going to give it a bit before I jump onboard. In so much as Steam could be called a player among Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, they are my favorite. I love the concept and implementation of Steam and I would spend my gaming money supporting them before the others.(Although Nintendo has got some good stuff they are kicking around this gen)

Death by EMPs list very useful. It is honestly not that difficult build your own PC. The component manufacturers have simplified the process over the years and I would say that if you can hook up an a/v receiver, you can basically build a PC. The only caveat would be that if you do indeed go for an HTPC build that mimics the SteamMachines, you'll be dealing with a much smaller form factor and will probably need more finesse when assembling it. I would personally go with a Full or Mid-Tower ATX case. They are big enough to work in, big enough to upgrade with massive amounts of stuff in the future, have the largest eco-system of compatible components. I spent about $1100 in 2011 to build my rig. I went with what, at the time, were the higher end components (ASUS MB with UBS3.0, 2600K processor, 16GB of RAM, SSD boot drive/HDD for media storage, 800W PSU) and it has really served me well. I've only had to upgrade the GPU and now I can run most games @1080p/60 fps maxed out. It also does 1440p at near max very well. While you could certainly build a better PC than a SteamMachine for around $750, I think it is worth expanding your budget a bit to future- proof your system for a few years. As long as you have a good CPU and PSU, you can upgrade slowly and keep up with the curve, if not beat it.
