Does anyone think GOG Galaxy will be a big competitor to Steam in the next few years? If so what do they have to implement to get gamers to choose their service over the competition? I guess they already are a competitor technically but at a glance it seems they cater towards indie games and older games, while the triple A offerings are either a few years old or from CD Projekt Red themselves. I'm assuming that's due to many larger developers not wanting to release their games without some form of DRM protection. I think that may limit how large they can grow in the future unless the indie scene gets as large as it is on Steam. I really like their business model of being DRM free, prices are equal no matter where you live, and if a game doesn't work you get a refund. Unlike Steam's bullshit 7 day ban from purchases if you want a refund. The only thing I'm not really digging about GOG Galaxy is that it's cool older games work but they're kind of expensive. I wouldn't mind trying Planescape Torment and replaying Demon Stone but not at $10 a pop :/ Right now it's pretty bare bones compared to Steam but it also just launched and hopefully gets large enough to rival Steam or Origin at the very least :] (At least I'm assuming Origin is big? I only used it for Old Republic) Anyway I'm rambling, what do you guys think about these two services and is CD Projekt Red going to be able to wean you off of Steam? I think it's gonna take a lot to knock Steam out of the top spot as far as digital distribution, platform, and multiplayer networking. I'm all for competition, but EA has been trying with Origin for a few years now and no real luck. Although that is only EA games though. It will be cool to see older games get more representation in this arena if GOG doesn't change what they are all about. |

I feel like having an actually client is not going to be the thing that sells people on GOG. This may make things handier for people that use GOG but the things that attached people to GOG before are the same things that are going to attached them know; DRM Free and the ability to play older games, also I would have more of an expectation that GOG is going to keep games working on future OSs. I also don’t see this bring in any more game makers. I don’t see the fact that GOG didn’t have a client being the deciding factor in not putting their game on GOG. I do think that on some level GOG is competition for Steam. GOG has something that is a little different from Steam. To be something that could potentially overtake Steam I feel like GOG would have to adopt a lot of aspect of Steam (like getting rid of the DRM Free policy) and in the end wouldn’t be GOG but Steam 2.0. It doesn’t always need to be a battle between to juggernauts, sometime being a smaller company that concentrates on what makes them unique can be just as good. |

A proper client for GOG is something i have been waiting a long time for, i like having a list of my games all in one place rather than me having to sift through folders looking for them. I hope they will flesh out some of the features in Galaxy, but so far it looks pretty good. GOG could potentially gather a huge community of game players that are generally against digital-only distribution, being completely DRM free is very appealing for a lot of people unsure about that kind of future. I have fully accepted the digital-only method already and am quite comfortable buying my games through Steam and occasionally Origin, but i can understand apprehensions people may have with it. I, for one, am dubious about buying things on XBL or PSN unless the titles are really cheap as i just don't trust either MS or Sony to future proof their digital titles and make them accessible in the future. The console space has shown itself to not be very forward thinking in that regard as new hardware iterations may cause issues unforeseen previously. GOG are a good company, with good customer service and a great vision. People notice that, especially in the current state the industry is in, and with a more all encompassing client i feel they may be able to really hit the point they really deserve to be at. |

Was eager to get onboard with GoG Galaxy. But I've been hideously underwhelmed. There is however, a tonne of time to improve. So, all good! |

It is fairly lacklustre and a bit bare bones at the moment, but i am hopeful of some improvements in the near future. |

I think it will be just like how GOG is right now just good for old school games. |

My problem is the same I had with consoles. I don't want to have 8 different networks to sign into and a different friends list on each. This was what made me so mad about EA only selling on Origin. It wasn't the Origin only sales that got me. It was the loss of Steam integration. Ever since Xbox Live started, the community network has been one of the most important selling factors for me on platforms. I know I'm in the minority, but the community is worth almost more than the games to me, and Steam has it going on right now with community. It's fine if I have to buy the game through Origin or GoG, but at the end of the day I won't really play it as much if it doesn't have Steam integration. The Origin thing also really bothered me because I was a huge Mass Effect and Dragon Age fan at that time.(Not so much anymore) |
