Is anyone else underwhelmed by Arkham Knight?

The more of this game that I play, the more I am finding myself horribly disappointed by it. The hallmark of the series has always been its terrific, class-leading combat system which, when combined with all of the cool stealth tactics it offers, creates the feeling of being Batman. All of these elements are there, but they are interrupted by what in my opinion are the simply horrendous batmobile missions, which cannot be skipped, and which feel completely out of place in the series. It cannot be overstated how badly these sequences disrupt one's enjoyment of the game's core mechanics. The batmobile controls are mediocre at best, and it's tank combat and climbing abilities are just tedious. And the longer I play, the more laughable I find the ways the game forces the car on you. All of these nefarious super villains seem to have plotted Batman's destruction through some challenge connected with the Batmobile, the para-military organization headed by the Arkham Knight is hell-bent on conquering Gotham with drone tanks that can only be destroyed by the Batmobile (quite easily, I might add), and the car is only meant to stun thugs even when they get run over at 200mph. Contrived stuff like this is just plain insulting....

The story, as someone who has never followed the comic books, does nothing to grab me and make me interested in the Batman universe. The graphics are pretty good, but the game seems to run as 30fps, which I guess is the sad reality of this console generation. The gameplay outside of the batmobile is as wonderful as ever...which makes it so enormously frustrating that it is constantly being interrupted by driving/tank combat missions and the ubiquitous AAA Hollywood style cut scenes.

In the end, I just see this game as a victim of marketing types checking off features that "need" to be in a modern AAA title and, in the process, they have ruined a once amazing series. What do you guys think? Does it get any better? Is there more traditional Arkham gameplay after clearing the main story?

I'm really enjoying it but I'm only like 3 hours in. I actually like the Batmobile, I'm just getting tired of killing the generic tanks over and over again. I'm also a bit confused about the side quests. Like the one where you have to find a serial killer by listening to when opera music starts playing. I've never once heard that while driving around.

I'm to the part where you're hunting the Arkham Knight and have to leave the Batmobile behind to cross the bridge to another part of Gotham.

To be honest, and I'm probably in the minority here, but I was never a fan of the Arkham games. Don't get me wrong, I love the Batman universe and the dark, gothic tone that the games take on, but the gameplay falls completely flat on me. The controls feel clunk, the combat relies on button-mashing and I just got bored of the games, Arkham City in particular. This saddens me, since I feel that I *should* like these games, but they just don't gel with me. For that reason, I'll be forgoing Arkham Knight for now.

This definitely feels like they're ticking off check boxes and trying to make it have a more movie feel. Although, what did you think of Arkham Origins? If anything I think that was the game to make me question the quality of the series moving forward. It was so buggy and unpolished that this feels like a big step above that. I'm also clearly not as far in this game as you so maybe my attitude will change.

There are so many other characters in the Batman universe that I'm just getting sick of seeing him already.

Hey, to each his own. I felt that Arkham City was the epitome of the series. It gave you a sense of what being Batman could possibly feel like, but yes, after a while in that game the combat scenarios did get repetitive. Still, I think it is tied for the best beatem-up of last gen, with Yakuza 4. Although the combat in AC was superior, Yakuza managed to combine Streets of Rage, Shenmue, and the JRPG into one crazy game that gives it the edge, in my opinion. Arkham Knight really doesn't advance the series in meaningful ways beyond AC, so you are right to forgo it if you are not a fan of the series.

You know, I never played Arkham Origins because of the reports of bugs and the fact that it did not give you a new environment to explore. Maybe I'll go back to it since there is no batmobile. :)

You are right about joker. He seems shoehorned into the game. I wish there were more varied characters, more civilians on the streets, and a more organically branching story that was revealed slowly based on what parts of the city you explored first. Instead, Rocksteady took the rinse and repeat approach plus tank combat approach...

It's an okay game. It has a lot more variety when it comes to villains which is cool, it's just filled with a lot of minor annoyances and bugs. Shame that it's not going to be in the Arkham remaster for PS4/Xbone though.

I still like Arkham Asylum the best :] The entire opening to that game was so incredible! Arkham City was excellent too I just got lost so many times in that game and I can't really figure out why. lol.

Yeah the tank sections in Arkham Knight are just a borefest. Even early on I'm sick of them.

Seems like there's a lack of enemies thus far. I'm around 7 hours in which I assume is at least the half way point since I skipped a good chunk of side missions and it's still just the Arkham Knight with stupid tank battles. I like the Batmobile when I'm not shooting generic tanks.

Finally finished this game. You and Gamespot nailed it, I don't know how this game was getting so many 9's. I got half an ending meaning I defeated Scarecrow, but it wants me to do side quests so I get the real ending which I'm not going to do. That's seriously stupid to require that when those missions are not very good, but what was there for ending the Scarecrow storyline was pretty freakin awesome :D

The tank stuff never ended and was reused constantly, especially in the second half of the game. Even the Arkham Knight fights were horrendous. I didn't mind the batmobile until I had to fight the Arkham Knight in it since it gave me this weird camera angle during the fights which constantly made me crash and lose my orientation when you'd have to flee...so frustrating. It's a mostly solid game but Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are just in another league compared to this game.
